Single-action connection

The cage clamp does not require any special tools and can be operated with a straight-slot screwdriver. Crimping terminals are not required because exposed cables can be directly connected to both solid and stranded wires. You won't have to drop or forget to tighten the screws. There are 2 types of terminal blocks, side entry and front entry, depending on the cable connection direction.

Connection Method

STEP1

STEP1

Insert the screwdriver into the operation slot (square hole). If plugged in correctly, the driver will be retained.

STEP2

STEP2

Once the screwdriver is held and the cage clamp is open, insert the properly exposed cable into the cable insertion slot (round hole) until it hits.

STEP3

STEP3

If you pull out the screwdriver while holding the cable, the connection is completed.

About the movable range of the spring

The upper edge of the spring opening (cage) hits the upper surface of the conductive part.

The upper edge of the spring opening (cage) hits the upper surface of the conductive part.

It hits the spring stopper provided in the housing.

It hits the spring stopper provided in the housing.

Due to the above, the range of motion of the spring is doubly limited, so the elastic limit is not exceeded and there is no deformation or damage.

Rationalization of end treatment

Any cable's coating can be peeled off and connected as it is without any special end treatment. Of course, cables with soldered tips or crimped terminals can also be connected in the same way. The international standard IEC60204-1 (safety of machinery) stipulates "1 cable for each clamp unit."

Automatic adjustment function according to the cable diameter

The cage clamp automatically adjusts the clamping force according to the cable diameter. The thicker the cable, the stronger the clamping force, and the spring follows the deformation and movement of the cable, so the cable does not loosen. Since the clamp surface of the cage clamp spring is flat, press it against the conductive part without damaging the cable. There is no problem connecting cables of different thickness to the same terminal block.

Contact reliability

When pulling out the cable, the cable is held by increasing the tightening force instead of biting into the conductor. Cage clamps meet the cable holding power requirements of VDE and IEC standards for all sizes.

By applying a large force (N) to a small area, the cage clamp obtains a contact pressure (N/mm^2) equal to or higher than that of the screw type tightened with an appropriate torque. Also, because it maintains a constant contact pressure, it does not require regular retightening.

Since the cable is pressed with a large pressure as if it were integrated with the conductive part, the contact part is not affected by the outside air (gastight = airtightness) and there is no deterioration due to corrosion. In addition, since the cage clamp presses the cable with the thick surface of the spring, unlike other plug-in type plate-shaped springs, it does not bite into the cable and damage it, and together with the automatic pressure adjustment function, the damage to the cable is rather smaller than the screw type.

The spring is made of stainless steel (equivalent to SUS631), has excellent corrosion resistance, and its mechanical properties are unaffected even at temperatures of 300°C (the housing material can be used continuously in ambient temperatures ranging from -50°C to +105°C *the operating temperature varies depending on the model), and it can be used without problems even after 1,000 or more operations. In addition, there are no problems such as sliding hardening, migration, whiskers, etc., which are problems in the case of tin plating.

High capacity

Cage clamps also have a high tolerance for short circuit currents. It has passed the short-circuit current test (current density 120 A/mm^2 = AC 1 second) based on IEC178 (CO) 128 without impairing its function. The cable coating melts off due to heat generated by overcurrent, but the terminal block is not damaged. In addition, the cage clamp uses high-purity electrolytic copper for the conductive part, and forms a stable contact surface with high contact pressure. For this reason, it exhibits excellent performance even with a small current and a small voltage, and can be connected to a thermocouple.

Vibration resistance, impact resistance

The cage clamp has a large clamping force, but the weight is made very small. It is also designed to maintain excellent weight distribution when connecting cables. As a result, there is no inherent resonance point, it is extremely resistant to vibration and shock, and there is no damage to the cable or measurable contact interruption. The cage clamp is subjected to vibration of up to 2,000 Hz and acceleration of up to 20 G as test conditions. It has also passed the vibration impact test by a third-party organization (a test in which the cage clamp is subjected to impact and vibration of up to 2,000 Hz and triaxial acceleration of up to 109 G each). The cage clamp also meets the requirements of the VDE0611 vibration test, which includes a tensile test while applying vibration, and has also passed a torsion test that applies a rotational force when a tensile force is applied to the cable.

About other electrical and environmental resistance tests

In addition to the above, each country's standards for electrical tests such as voltage drop, overcurrent, withstand voltage, high frequency characteristics, weak current, and environmental resistance tests for high temperature, high humidity, vibration, salt spray, sulfite gas and other corrosive gases. The manufacturer has test data based on, and they have obtained results that greatly exceed those standards.

About maintenance free

It maintains excellent electrical characteristics stably for a long period of time and is resistant to vibration and shock, so maintenance and inspection after cable connection is not required. Cage clamps can improve the reliability of products and equipment and reduce total costs. Considering the on-site maintenance to deal with loosening due to vibration during transportation of the product and its labor cost, the saving effect is enormous. Repairs and refurbishments can be done easily without any special preparation.

Development story

WAGO was founded in Germany in 1950 as a manufacturer of spring connection technology.
CAGECLAMP is an epoch-making system that connects cables (CLAMP) inspired by a birdcage (CAGE) and was launched in 1977.
It was adopted by Deutsche Bahn, the German national railway company, which was experiencing a serious problem of loosening due to shaking at that time, and its reliability was proved.
It has been adopted in Japan since the time of the national railways, and is now also used for the shinkansen.
